UPDATE 12/1/2023: THIS TOURNAMENT WAS RESCHEDULED TO FROM 12/3/2023 TO JANUARY 28, 2024.

All preregistrations have been moved to the new date, and registration is reopened for additional participants. Kindly help us for planning purposes, by removing any fencers who will not be participating, or message us for assistance. Thank you for your understanding.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 11:59 p.m., WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 (No Late Registrations)

Scholastic League Events are held by Grade level, NOT age. Please list your SCHOOL NAME as your PRIMARY CLUB on ASKFRED. You must show your School ID & USFA membership card upon check-in. The Southern California Scholastic Fencing League (SCSFL) individual events are open to all current Middle School and High School students.  NOVICE events will not award classifications (ratings).


  • NOVICE TOURNAMENT CRITERIA: The SCSFL novice tournament is for fencers with 1 year or less fencing experience. The NOVICE tournament is unsanctioned and no ratings will be awarded. Rated fencers are not eligible to participate, nor are fencers who have previously competed in any previous SoCal Fencing League Novice tournaments.   (Example: if you fenced 2 years of epee and decided to switch to saber, and only fenced saber for 2 months, you are NOT a novice saber fencer.)  Medals will be awarded to top finishers in each novice event.

Event times are "Close of Check In".  All fencers need to arrive at the venue at least ONE HOUR BEFORE to check-in, get equipment inspected and warm up.

REGISTER EARLY: Please assist the organizers of this event by registering AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE. The League will hire referees and schedule fencing strips based on numbers of registered fencers. Your early registration helps the League plan timely events. THERE WILL BE NO LATE REGISTRATIONS and NO SIGN UPS ON THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT.

-- "Y-14" events are open to current Middle School Students (Grades 6-8) and

"Junior" events are open to current High School students (Grades 9 to 12).

-- Must bring School ID (Proof of School and Grade) If your school does not issue a school ID, please bring proof of school enrollment, i.e. registration, letter from school stating grade, etc.

-- When REGISTERING on AskFred for this tournament, if possible, please list your SCHOOL NAME as your PRIMARY CLUB. (Under USFA membership, you can still keep your Fencing Club as your Primary Club)

SoCal SCHOLASTIC FENCING LEAGUE SCHOOLS

Fencers may show proof of enrollment in a current league school, or else they will be considered a "non-league school fencer".    For more information on the SoCal Scholastic Fencing League, and a current list of member schools, please check our website at https://www.schsfence.org/.

TOURNAMENT FEES: 

League School Fencer: $10.00 per individual event.

Non-League School Fencer: $20.00 Registration plus $60.00 per event (Total $80.00 for one event)

Fees will be collected the day of the tournament or may be prepaid by PayPal or Venmo in the week preceding the tournament (see below).

CHECK IN ON TOURNAMENT DAY:

PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST ONE HOUR BEFORE YOUR EVENT AND BRING THE FOLLOWING (NO EXCEPTIONS):

•              School ID (and make sure to list your school as the primary club on AskFred for this tournament)

•              Proof of CURRENT USFA Competitive or Access Membership (You must show copy of card which displays your expiration date)

EVENT FORMAT: There will be one round of pools with 100% advancing to direct elimination in all individual competitions. The direct elimination bouts will be fifteen touch bouts, with the appropriate breaks determined by which weapon is being fenced.

EQUIPMENT:

Uniform:  A full fencing Jacket (FIE not required), a plastron (underarm protector), a glove, and fencing knickers.   Socks must cover all the leg not covered by the knickers.  Women's equipment must include breast protectors made of metal or rigid material inside the jacket. The appropriate glove, lame’ and mask for the weapon being fenced are required. Please wear shoes with non-marking or white soles to all competitions. Foil Chest Protector: USFA Foil "Padded" chest guards will be enforced and checked.  Material must have the SEMI technical mark at the center of the upper edge, per USA Fencing Rules of Competition, section m.25.4(c) Sabre:   All sabre fencers must use a USA Fencing approved 800N glove. Leon Paul brand MASK owners: If you have the Leon Paul "X-Change" mask with the plastic disk in back, please note that a secondary neck strap is now REQUIRED for all USA Fencing domestic events and non-conforming equipment will be disallowed. Please consult your coach or the armorer with any questions.

INSPECTIONS:    Masks and gloves will be inspected by the armorer. Weapons will be tested on the strip. You will not be allowed to fence with equipment that does not conform to USFA standards.

SCSFL LEAGUE AWARDS & ADDITIONAL CRITERIA FOR NOVICE & TEAM EVENTS

  • INDIVIDUAL EVENT AWARDS: Please note that medals are not awarded for SCSFL individual events.  Rather, the cumulative points are tabulated from final results in Individual Events #1 and #2 for the season.  Medals will be awarded 1st through 8th place, at the conclusion of the #2 Individual Events in Foil, Epee and Sabre.  The awards ceremonies will be held immediately following the #2 individual event competitions in the Spring Semester.

  • TEAM EVENT QUALIFICATIONS: All Varsity High School Fencers must fence in either/or both the #1 or #2 Individual Events in order to be considered for a High School Varsity "A" Team for the SoCal Scholastic League Team Tournament.  All fencers must fence in at least one SoCal Scholastic League individual event or Novice event to qualify to fence in a Team Event.  Additional TEAM TOURNAMENT qualifications, team level descriptions & fee info applies to team events.  Please review the “more info” page on AskFred.net for those specific dates.
