About Kelly Koehler: Kelly is the Vice-Chair of the International Referee Development and Assignments Committee and is an internally renown referee. She has been refereeing for 25 years. She has refereed at the Olympics and gold medal foil bouts at World Championships.


Who should attend:

Fencers and referees interested in improving their understanding of the rules and calls made at higher level tournaments. Referees wanting to improve their skills to ref at regional events. There will be opportunities for fencers to bout and practice so that referees can get feedback from Kelly.


How to Make The Most of This Clinic:

Referees: While this clinic is geared toward referees that have already been actively refereeing beginning referees that have reviewed and studied the rules manual and that have taken their online exam can also get a lot out of this clinic. We highly recommend those attending take their online exam prior to attending to get the most out of the information from Kelly and so that you can ask lots of questions. Fencers: This clinic can help you understand how/why calls go one way verses another and you can get a lot of bouting practice in to demonstrate and help aspiring referees practice calls. Fencers that take the clinic can get discount on fencing in one of our other events (see below).


Observations and Additional Observed Referee Practice:

Sunday Oct. 27th, 2024 at the CBA Senior Women's Open referees will be able to practice and get observed. The tournament starts at 8AM and there will be a break around noon for feedback and then we will resume observations and referee practice until approximately 3pm.


If you are 18 or older, before you may be observed, you will need to:

  1. Add + check-ed to your USA Fencing membership,
  2. Have a current background check (this can take up to 10 days to get back),
  3. Have completed the SafeSport training, and
  4. Sign the Referee Hire Contract located in your membership profile.
