11am - Senior Open Mixed Saber
The Open saber event will begin at 11am. If we have 28 or fewer participants, than we are going to run the event SHARKS AND MINNOWS style (see more details below), if we have 29 or greater participants than we will run a standard format event with a single round of pools, 100% promotion into direct elimination.
Sharks and Minnows Event Format:
"Sharks and Minnows" is an approved USA fencing sanctioned event in which the tournament runs through two rounds of pools before heading into direct elimination. The first pool round is seeded like a normal event, with even distribution of the ranked/rated athletes among the pools. After the first pool round is completed and round results are compiled, a second "shark and minnow" pool round is generated. For example, if there are 28 athletes in 4 pools of 7. In the second round, the top 7 seeds from round 1 get put together into the "shark" pool in which their second pool round results seed them into the top 7 seeds in the bracket. The remaining "minnow" pools would be competing for the remaining seed slots on the tableau. This creates a very exciting and fun second pool round as the athletes are fighting for specific seeds on the bracket in similar strength based pools.
