7th Annual Dr. Gene Packer Open Epee @ Freehold Fencing

Senior Women's Epee starts at 9:30 am, Senior Mixed Epee starts at 11:00 pm. This event is sanctioned by the USFA's NJ Division. You must be born in 2011 or before to fence in this event.

All fencers must wear required fencing attire and bring at least 2 working weapons and 2 working body cords.

Valid USFA membership is required. We will check your USFA card at the door when checking in (or digital card that is emailed to you when registering for a membership).

NO-SHOW POLICY:

We are trying to discourage people from pre-registering and not showing up. If you are listed as pre-registered in the 24 hours before close of check-in and you do not show up, your name goes on a warning list. If you do so again you will not be able to pre-register for Freehold Fencing Academy events for the next calendar year. This means that you won't be able to pre-register via askFRED and you will have to compete as a walk-in entry. If you pre-register and cannot show up, simply remove your name from the pre-registration list.

You acknowledge you are entering this tournament at your own risk and release the USFA and its sponsors, Freehold Fencing Academy, and referees from any liability. With entry you give consent to Freehold Fencing Academy to obtain medical care from any licensed physician, hospital or clinic for any injury or illness that may arise during activities associated with this tournament. **

Who was Dr. Eugene (Gene) Packer?

He began fencing at age 12, and first competed when he attended college at RPI, coached by Frank Collins, learning all 3 weapons but specializing in point weapons. He continued to compete in epee while studying in Brussels, finishing 10th in the Belgian Nationals in 1973. He was assistant coach at Lakeland HS in 1988-89. He also ran Fair Lawn's fencing program as head coach for 20 years, retiring in 2016. He has also served as the President of the HS Coaches Association (NJIFA) from 2012-2016. He volunteered his time as a member of the NJ Division's Executive Committee, and also the Tournament Committee. Fencers always saw him at competitions as a referee and/or armorer all over New Jersey, NY, and New England. He was one of the pioneers of r promoting our sport in high schools throughout the area. In September 2018, Dr. Packer passed away sadly. We will continue to run this tournament in his memory every year to show our appreciation for his hardwork and dedication.

FEE (paid at the door):

$50 for Freehold Fencing members.

$60 if preregistered on askfred.net

$70 for walk-ins.

$40 for a second event (if applicable).

EQUIPMENT RENTAL FEES:

$10 - Body Cord/Mask Cord/Glove

$20 - Any other Equipment (Mask, Lame, Jacket)

$30 - 2 or more pieces of equipment

$45 - Any broken blade

All payments made at the door and must be in cash or check only.
