Laszlo Szepesi, a Hungarian Fencing Master, has been one of the more influential coaches of the last 30 years. He engineered the resurgence of French Saber as their Head Coach from 1982-93, during that time his athletes won 8 Olympic and World Championship medals. Since then he has served as the Head Coach of Hungarian & Chinese Saber teams. Currently he coaches at Karpati Rudolf in Budapest and teaches the next generation of coaches at the Hungarian University of Physical Education. Recently, several of his students have been members of Hungarian National teams and won medals in both Cadet & Junior at European Championships and placed Top 8 at Junior World Championships.
Maestro Szepesi will lead the camp, including a portion for coaches wanting to improve their lesson methodology and pedagogy. Several topics will be explored in the context of both group and individual lessons including defense against compound attacks; attacks with beats; and using preparations to set up attack and defense. For the more advanced coaches, he will also touch on setting up training plans for competitive fencers how to get your athletes in top form for the coming season.
He will be accompanied by 8 of his athletes from Karpati Rudolf Vivoklub, all with Cadet & Junior experience at either the European Circuit or Junior World Cups. Notably, Greta Koos has 2 Cadet medals, an individual Bronze and Team Gold from the European Championships.
Ayach Bounachada is the current Head Coach and Technical Director of Manitoba Fencing and the coach of several members of the Canadian Junior Saber & Foil team. He has coached 2 Olympians on 2 continents and his athletes have finished Top 8 at Junior World Championships several times. He will be assisting with the coaching portion of the camp as his position in Manitoba requires him to be able to develop coaches.
Fernando Medina is a Spanish Coach from Madrid who has competed in 3 Olympic Games and won an Individual Bronze Medal in the 1998 World Championships. His athletes have represented Spain at Junior and Senior World Championships. He is currently the Head Coach at Club Esgrima Barajas.
Camp Schedule: each day of camp will run from 9:30 - 3:30 with a 1 hour lunch. A Wednesday or Thursday afternoon will be scheduled as free time with several possibilities: a visit to one of the Chicago Museums or the Lakefront for some relaxation and recovery.
