The Capitol Division is hosting an official USA Fencing referee seminar on October 18 for individuals interested in becoming certified USA Fencing referee. Attending a referee seminar is a required prerequisite to certification, and fencers, parents, or individuals from any division are welcome to attend.
The seminar will be run by Russ Wilson, a three-time Olympic referee and AAA-rated international referee, certifying him to referee the Olympic Finals in each weapon. He is the last living person to have refereed both Foil and Sabre at the Olympic Games, having refereed at the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Olympic Games.
As an athlete, Russ was junior national champion, twice All-American, and four-time First Team All-Ivy League selections for Columbia University. Russ won a bronze individual and a gold team medal at the 1985 Maccabiah event. He was also a three-time selection for Team USA to the Junior World Championships.

Observations
The referee seminar will be hosted in conjunction with the University of Maryland's Chaos Open tournament on October 19. Participants who attend the seminar are eligible to referee at the Chaos Open and be observed and will be asked for their interest to do so the week prior to the event.
Referees are strongly encouraged to take USA Fencing's online referee test in advance of the seminar so they can be issued referee ratings at the Chaos Open.
