Seminar Thursday and Friday 5-9PM; observations Saturday/Sunday 8-5pm at the Duel in Dallas
The N Texas Division Fall Referee Seminar will be held Thursday, November 14th, 5-9pm at Fencing Institute of Texas, 1000 W Crosby Rd., suite 134, Carrollton, Texas; and Friday, November 15th, 6-10PM at Dallas Market Center Main Hall, 2200 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, Texas. Observations will take place during the Duel in Dallas ROC/RJCC/RYC. Parking is free at both locations. We will also make Thursday evening available via Zoom for out of town students; however, Friday must be attended in person.
Mark Stasinos is an N in all three weapons; is a Referee Assigner at National Championships and other National tournaments; and is a Master Coach. His student, Julie Seal, is also a master coach, and is one of our best Veteran fencers. Mark has been the Head Referee for NCAA championships for several years.
You will be given practical information and real-life studies in foil, epee and sabre refereeing. The information you will be given is meant to help you pass the referee exams. Practicals will be Friday. Observations will be done at the Duel in Dallas, Saturday and Sunday, November 16-17, Dallas Market Center Main Hall, 2200 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX.
Anyone who takes the seminar, passes the exams and is observed at the Duel in Dallas will receive $45/full day of refereeing if they earn, renew or increase their referee rating. This is a great opportunity for fencers to reduce their participation fees for tournaments. More importantly, refereeing makes you a better fencer. Refereeing and taking an in-person clinic gives you better insight into how a referee sees actions differently than how you believe you execute them.
If you are 18 or older, before you may be observed, you will need to:
- Add check-ed to your USA Fencing membership,
- Have a current background check (this can take up to 10 days to get back),
- Have completed the SafeSport training, and
- Sign the Referee Hire Contract located in your membership profile.
We are not able to let you referee without these items completed. Referees are to wear appropriate attire. This is a sport jacket and tie for men; jacket and white shirt for women.
If you have any questions about referee requirements, dress code, etc., please email Mark Stasinos at mdakstas@aol.com.
