The Youth Enrichment League’s developmental training camp is a great opportunity for fencers to work on improving their personal fencing skills as well as their competition tactical and technical abilities. The camp will focus on key areas of fencing including physical and psychological preparation, tactical preparation and decision making, as well as specific fencing skills. This camp will help the fencer get ready for the com- petitive season as well as increase their awareness of what they need to do to perform well.
This year, YEL’s guest coach will be Mike Pederson. Mike is the former United States and Canadian national coach for Women’s Foil and a two-time Olympic coach - Beijing 2008 (Silver Medal WF team) and Tokyo 2021.
Topics will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Gold Medal Activation – how to prepare to win your competition.
- Making tactical decisions during fencing and just what are tactics and how can I create a tactic for each opponent?
- My coaches always yell “DISTANCE” –just what exactly do they want me to do?
- Things I can do every practice that guarantee to make me better.
- How to train with purpose or “it’s not just swinging a sword”
- The secret to being a successful fencer–really...I’m going to tell you the secret!
- Footwork, bladework, Partnerwork, Games, Coordination, Agility and more!
The YEL is looking forward to a great camp and can’t wait to see you on the piste!
Mike Pederson Bio
A fencer from the age of 15, Mike Pederson has taken his passion for sports, excellence, and teamwork to the highest levels. Mike has coached National Teams from Canada and the USA at senior and junior world championships, at the Olympics and at international competitions around the globe. In 2007, in recognition of his excellence, the US Fencing Association honored him as Fencing Coach of the Year.
In 2008, he coached the USA Olympic women’s foil team to a silver medal – the first medal for women’s foil team in USA fencing history and in doing so became the first US born fencing coach to coach a USA team to a medal at the Olympics. In 2009 in Belfast, Mike coached the USA junior Under-20 world team to another historic team gold medal at the Junior World Championships.
Mike’s athletes have won national championships in most age category events, NCAA championships, and have represented the USA and Canada at the world championships and the Olympics.
In 2014, Paul Apsimon, the Canadian WF team coach, approached Mike to work with them to help achieve their goal of becoming a power in women’s foil. During the time
that Mike has worked with the women’s foil team and their coach Paul Apsimon, the Canadian Women’s Foil Team has achieved their best world ranking, placing 5th in team at the Tokyo Olympics. They have won 4 junior and cadet world championship individual medals, and 2 senior world cup medals.
Mike was an owner and coach at Golden Gate Fencing Center in San Francisco where he coached all ages of athletes from 4 years old to 75 years old. His club motto was “Champions in sport – Champions in life” and his background and experience of over 30 years of coaching at every level from grassroots to the Olympics has given him insight and perspective on what it takes to make such a champion.
He currently lives in Montreal, Canada and is continuing his passion for coaching by working with clubs and athletes from the Montreal area with the goal of making the province of Quebec the top fencing province in Canada.
