Improve your team exponentially. Become a leader for your team. Learn skills and drills you can bring back to your team.
When preparing for the high school fencing season we tend to try and get a lot of bouting in so we think we are ready. But once the season starts there can feel like a lack of guidance or direction with practices. Maybe you have a skilled coach but they can only make it to practices a couple days a week. Maybe you have a dedicated teacher coaching your team but they are still learning about the sport. Maybe your team needs a leader.
This clinic will give you actionable skills, techniques, and drills to bring to your high school teams so you can better support your teammates on an individual, squad, and team level. If you are looking to be a better leader on your high school team this is the clinic for you.
We will be breaking our instruction into 5 sessions:
Session 1: Team Warm-ups and Conditioning
Session 2: Footwork for Teams and Weapons
Session 3: Bladework for Teams and Weapons
Session 4: Strip Strategy
Session 5: Team Strategy and Culture
Each session will have takeaways for yourself and your program, finishing off each session bouting with other participants and our collegiate fencers.
Daniel Bailey-Yavonditte, 2020 USA Fencing High School Coach of the Year, will be bringing the lessons he has learned on the national, collegiate, and high school levels to you in this 5 part series. Assisted by experienced Drew University fencers, who have worked together building a similar mentality and culture in their own program, you have a chance to learn from those that have found success on the high school level and beyond. If you want to be a part of elevating the level of your high school team in just a year this will be the one clinic that will not only benefit you as a fencer but your whole program moving forward.

Session 5: Team Strategy and Culture
For a sport built on individual performance, high school and college fencing are a unique opportunity to work together as a team. The ability to work well as part of a team in high school can set you up for success as part of a collegiate program and beyond. The high school programs that you see coming in at the top of the state each year have one significant thing in common, they have an established positive culture around their programs. Coach B-Y will talk you through how teams establish that culture, build positive bonds, and work together as a team to find success during the season.
